Pissed off by the Myanmar army’s refusal to cease the rip-off enterprise, from which it was virtually actually profiting, Beijing tacitly backed an offensive by an ethnic rebel alliance in Shan State in late 2023. The alliance captured vital territory from the army and overran Laukkaing, a key border city.
