Patrol boats and helicopters are looking for 48 refugees and migrants lacking after their boat sank close to the Spanish island of El Hierro, however officers say hopes of discovering survivors are fading.

As hopes of discovering extra survivors diminished, police put in a morgue on El Hierro, authorities mentioned.

Three different boats reached the Canary Islands in the course of the evening, carrying 208 folks.

This catastrophe follows the deaths of 39 people in early September when their boat sank off Senegal whereas trying the same crossing to the Canaries, from the place they apparently hoped to achieve mainland Europe.

In some 30 years of refugee and migrant crossings to the islands, the deadliest shipwreck recorded so far occurred off the island of Lanzarote in 2009, when 25 folks died.
