Parliament was briefly suspended on Thursday after Māori MPs carried out a haka to disrupt a vote on a controversial invoice that has ignited protests throughout New Zealand.
The invoice proposes to vary the way in which wherein the Treaty of Waitangi – a 184-year-old treaty between the British Crown and Māori folks – is interpreted.
Māori MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke ripped up a duplicate of the invoice as she stood to guide the haka in parliament. Members from her occasion, Te Pāti Māori, different events and a few within the public gallery joined in.
