In 2016, Beijing lower off high-level communications with Taiwan after the ruling Democratic Progressive Celebration’s (DPP) Tsai Ing-wen turned president, citing her refusal to endorse the idea of a single Chinese language nation. The DPP is amongst those that have criticised Cheng’s journey, accusing her of being “subservient” to Beijing.
