Yemen’s Houthi motion has launched the crew of the cargo ship Galaxy Chief, which it seized in November 2023 initially of a marketing campaign of assaults on Crimson Sea transport linked to the Gaza battle.

The 25 Filipinos, Mexicans, Romanians, Bulgarians and Ukrainians have been detained since Houthi fighters used a helicopter to board the Bahamas-flagged automobile provider because it sailed from Turkey to India.

The information was welcomed by the IMO’s Secretary-Common, Arsenio Dominguez, who mentioned: “This can be a second of profound aid for all of us – not just for the crew and their households, but additionally to the broader maritime group.”

“Right now’s breakthrough is a testomony to the ability of collective diplomacy and dialogue, recognizing that harmless seafarers should not develop into collateral victims in wider geopolitical tensions,” he added.

Over the previous 14 months, the Houthis have focused dozens of service provider vessels with missiles, drones and small boat assaults within the Crimson Sea and the Gulf of Aden. In addition to seizing the Galaxy Chief, they’ve sunk two vessels and killed 4 crew members.

They’ve mentioned they’re performing in help of the Palestinians within the battle between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, and have claimed – typically falsely – that they’re focusing on ships solely linked to Israel, the US or the UK.

The Galaxy Chief was being operated by the Japanese transport line NYK when it was seized.

The vessel is owned by Galaxy Maritime Ltd, which is registered within the Isle of Man. It’s in flip owned by Ray Automotive Carriers, which is co-owned by Israeli businessman Abraham Ungar, in keeping with paperwork from the Isle of Man Authorities’s Firms registry.

The Houthis haven’t been deterred by the deployment of Western warships within the Crimson Sea and Gulf of Aden to guard service provider vessels, or by US and British air strikes on territory they management in north-western Yemen.

As an alternative, transport corporations have been utilizing the longer and costlier route across the southern tip of Africa.
