The US has twice sided with Russia in votes on the United Nations to mark the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the Trump administration’s change of stance on the battle.

First the US opposed a European-drafted decision condemning Moscow’s actions and supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity – voting the identical means as Russia and international locations together with North Korea and Belarus on the UN Normal Meeting (UNGA) in New York.

Then the US drafted and voted for a decision on the UN Safety Council which referred to as for an finish to the battle however contained no criticism of Russia.

The Safety Council handed the decision however two key US allies, the UK and France, abstained after their makes an attempt to amend the wording have been vetoed.

The UN resolutions have been tabled as French President Emmanuel Macron visited President Donald Trump at the White House in an try to deal with their sharp variations over the battle.

On Thursday, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will likewise go to the brand new American chief.

Trump’s White Home has upended the transatlantic alliance, currying favour with Moscow and casting doubt on America’s long-term dedication to European safety.

That rift was laid naked on the ground of the 193-member UNGA on Monday as US diplomats pushed their restricted decision mourning the lack of life through the “Russia-Ukraine battle” and calling for a swift finish to it.

European diplomats tabled a extra detailed textual content, blaming Russia for its full-scale invasion, and supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We have to reconfirm that the aggression ought to be condemned and discredited, not rewarded,” stated Ukrainian Deputy International Minister Mariana Betsa.

UNGA members backed the European decision by 93 votes however, terribly, the US didn’t abstain however truly voted in opposition to it, together with Russia, Israel, North Korea, Sudan, Belarus, Hungary and 11 different states, with 65 abstentions.

The UNGA additionally handed the US decision however solely after it was amended to incorporate language supporting Ukraine, which led to the US abstaining.

On the rather more highly effective 15-member UN Safety Council, the unamended US decision – which referred to as for an finish to the battle however contained no criticism of Russia – was handed by 10 votes, with the UK, France, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia abstaining.

America’s performing envoy to the UN, Dorothy Camille Shea, described the US decision as a “easy historic assertion… that appears ahead, not backwards. A decision targeted on one easy thought: ending the battle”.

Hardly ever has the US been so at odds with its supposed European allies.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine three years in the past, the Safety Council has been deadlocked by the facility of Russia, one in all its 5 everlasting members, to veto any decision there.

For that reason the UNGA has been the principle discussion board for debating the battle. However its resolutions aren’t legally binding for member states, in contrast to these of the Safety Council.
